Today I walked out back behind the Ceramics room at MCG and found that the building across the parking lot in the industrial park was being painted a uniform 75ish% grey. It is covered with some sort of pale yellow-green siding that is a little translucent and has aged and weathered interestingly. Now I admit that my aesthetic does not agree with everyone, but still I wonder why we feel the need to cover every potentially interesting surface with uniformly bland color. I'm reminded of my trip to Italy a couple years back when I climbed the Bell Tower in Florence, and there, ten stories up on the side of the Duomo were beautiful little intricate carvings. At one point in the history of human culture did we stop believing that things should be beautiful? I'm not expecting a print shop in an industrial park to spend the money to turn their building into a work of art, but why not work with what you got and try and make it look interesting? You're spending quite a bit of money just to paint the whole thing dark grey, and maybe I'm wrong, and the dark grey will look nice when finished, but I think I will miss it the way it was.
So I scurried upstairs and got my camera before they could finish.
